Gizmodo reports ( that one of its readers recently visited the Genius Bar at the SoHo Apple retail store ( in New York City complaining that 30% of his attempted calls were being dropped, and was informed after testing that such performance was considered normal by AT&T's standards for the area. The reader provided Gizmodo with a copy of the Genius Bar work authorization form noting the technician's assessment of the situation.Issue Description: dropped calls, poor signal
Steps to Reproduce: plugged into behavior scan, report concludes that phone has dropped over 22 percent of the phone calls made. customer states that the percentage is a bit higher but does not register to the phone due to the fact that when a call begins to fail he manually disconnects the call.
    Issue Verified: Yes
Proposed Resolution: this is a basic trouble shooting case so that the customer may report back to ATT to show that the phone is fully functional and the problem is consistent with the service provided by ATTAT&T has acknowledged that it has struggled with service performance in areas of high iPhone density such as the New York City and San Francisco Bay areas, and has recently taken steps ( to enhance 3G service in those and other markets.

There is a lot of Apple Dick riding going on.

    Here? Never.

But this does my school did a survey online and we found as March 20 the Ratios look like this- Blackberry 17%, iOS 40, Android 35%, other ties in the rest. Highest selling phone: iPhone 4, iPhone 3gs, Lg Optimus 1 series of phones.

Online surveys are worth the paper they are written on. The best data suggest that iPhone marketshare in the US is stagnant and Android based handsets are booming

If this patent is anything close to reality, Apple may be prepping something much bigger than an iPod, something closer to a full-featured OS X tablet computer. You'll be running a full-featured version of iTunes, not just the simplified UI of the iPod:
but who would want to have a full featured iTunes when you still haven't solved the problem of typing. The most efficient part for me is to type out what you're looking for. I do, however, see the advantage to making playlists more efficiently on the go, giving you the ability to shuffle anything you choose, not just "All Songs" which is a bother. :)

While "great deal faster" is fuzzy language open to interpretation, IMO I don't consider 10 Gbps TBolt to be a "great deal faster" than 6 Gbps SATA. TBolt can't handle two SATA connections at full bandwidth - that's not a "great deal faster" in my opinion.

When it was called "Light Peak", the technology had a lot of promise. Now that it's been downgraded to daisy-chained copper - it's only a little bit better than USB 3.0. Except that we can buy USB 3.0 devices, it's still "in the future" for TBolt devices.

You always seem to forget that Tbolt is a dual bidirectional 10Gb/s channel technology, so in fact it can handle 4 SATA connections, 2 upstream and 2 downstream. With room to spare. On a single port.

But besides the raw speed of TBolt, it's the variety of devices that will be available: high-end storage, audio and video, docking equipment, etc., and the fact that PCIe-class devices will finally be available for computers without PCIe slots. It's perfectly sound for a company like Apple with 90% of their computers without PCIe slots, to pioneer that kind of technology.

Copper or optical wouldn't have change a thing except the max. length of the connection (up to 100m instead of 3m). And FWIW, the only devices you can buy today in USB3 are marginally faster (than FW800) single storage units, and there are already single solid-state drives that are faster than USB3 ( A couple of video devices that are already obsolete due to some TBolt announcements, and not a single audio interface. No need to trash TBolt because it can't handle $50,000+ devices (RAID Arrays of SSD on 16x PCIe cards) that only a handful of people worldwide will ever buy. As for the "low-end" ioDrive duo, prices range from $9,000 to $12,000 (320/640GB).

Somehow I'm glad Tbolt is not fast enough to handle those devices, I also need a new car.

Good sign, maybe I'll be able to buy a consumer external hard drive with Thunderbolt by fall.

This is more than evident, since TB devices will just start to trickle with the millions and millions of MBP and future iMac users out there. TB is THE future of I/O, especially given Intel's explicit endorsement - USB 3.0 is dead meat in comparison.

I am gonna buy the new iMac with TB, and hope to get an external TB HD by May at the latest.

Could someone clarify this for me: Aren't hard drives too slow to make use of Thunderbolt anyway? In a typical USB 2.0 external hard drive, what is the bottleneck in speed: The speed at which the hard drive spins, or the USB 2.0 connection? If it's the USB, then why do people even care about the RPM of a drive? If it's the RPM, then isn't USB 2.0 fast enough to run a hard drive at its native speed?

No, not with SandForce SSDs getting in the mainstream market now - with their 6Gb/s speeds (and more to come in the near future), they will easily justify the use of TB...

AT&T's HSPA+ can pull down 21 MB theoretically. 4x faster than HSPA 7.2.

The theoretical never actually happen though. That's why I'd take a superior network standard with a lower frequency, and thus better building penetration, any day.

USB 2.0 is definitely not fast enough to saturate a hard drives speed, it's very limiting.

Firewire 800 isn't fast enough to saturate multi-drive RAIDs, either.

I'm really looking forward to Mac minis with Thunderbolt. Hook them up to some nice 4+ drive external RAIDs with Thunderbolt and I can replace a bunch of aging Xserves and PowerMac G5 servers with much smaller and much faster replacements.

Well Apple has used up all the "big cat" names like Tiger and Lion which means that either OS 11 is underway or they will be in the embarassing situation of having to use lesser cat names which imply "less".

    Ocelot, Cheetah, Cougar, Fluffy, etc......

I for one am ready for OS 11.0 "Merlot"

    Snow Lion?

Others have touched on this as well, but here's what Charlie said in one of his latest interviews (

...?I?m not angry, I?m passionate,? Sheen told Rossen. ?It?s everybody thinks I should be begging for my job back, and I?m just going to forewarn them that it?s everybody else that?s going to be begging me for their job back.?...

In the interview with Rossen, which was taped Sunday in Sheen?s Beverly Hills home, the actor accused Lorre of ?trying to destroy my family.? He also again took aim at Alcoholics Anonymous, calling it a failed system developed by a ?broken-down fool that was a plagiarist.? He claimed he has conquered his own drug and alcohol problems by the sheer force of his will: ?I closed my eyes and made it so.?

After checking himself out of rehab, Sheen set up his own home rehab facility called ?Sober Valley Lodge,? from which the principles of A.A. had been banned. ?I will not believe that if I do something then I have to follow a certain path, because it was written nice,? he said. ?It was written for normal people, people that aren?t special. People that don?t have tiger blood, you know, Adonis DNA.?

He dismissed the idea that he has anything in common with addicts and alcoholics, who he says lack his strength of character, describing them as ?fools, trolls. Weak. Defeated. They allowed defeat to be an option. I will not.

?I?m tired of pretending like I?m not special,? Sheen continued. ?I?m tired of pretending like I?m not bitching, a total fricking rock star from Mars, and people can?t figure me out; they can?t process me. I don?t expect them to. You can?t process me with a normal brain.?..

Sheen accused his producers, Lorre in particular, of trying to destroy him and his family by ?trying to take all my money, and leave me with no means to support my family. It?s not rocket science, you know??...

Rather than apologizing, Sheen said it was he who was owed an apology, by CBS: ?A big one. While licking my feet.?Okay, this is past the point where it's funny. This man has some very serious mental issues. He's starting to out-crazy Gadhafi -- and that's not easy.

Not really. There are some markets where Verizon LTE is able to pull down over 10 MB/s, which T-mobile's HSPA+ and WiMax can't touch.

AT&T's HSPA+ can pull down 21 MB theoretically. 4x faster than HSPA 7.2.

But you have to run windows... GPU3 will apparently allow macs to run the gpu client because of open CL, and also help ATI which are fairings very poorly right now in Folding.

yeah i know, which stinks, but at least windows 7 is a little better.

here's the problem for me and the bigadv units: i can't really use the computer for anything else. but with the gpus going, i can still use the system.

gpu3 will be good, but still, apple doesn't allow for all the video cards though

Spring-loaded folders in the dock. So you can drag a file onto a folder in the dock and have it spring open - like in the Finder.

Actually you can already do this - I have my documents, applications and photos folders on the dock and they spring open etc...Excellent feature by the way. I think all they are really doing is giving you the ability to control how long you have to wait before they spring.....

The computers that are just finishing a CPU conversion, but are still rated as being good buys by non-Mac publications?

    Perspective, my young padawan, perspective....
I hear a bit of what he is saying though. I mean there wasn't much innovation, just.... it was more like building the perfect car, say something like a Subaru WRX ( my car that I love very much) but replaced with a nicer engine from Porsche.... some better tires off a Lancer.... a nice tranny off of Porsche again.... neverthless... this is what they did with the Mac. Took some great stuff out there like Glossy Screen, Webcams, and Intel chips and put em in our loving Mac. However, the only piece of innocation was the Maglev charger. There was no new standards... no new gear. Yet, I do believe you are asking for too much if they are expected to innovate every product revision. Its becoming a very big company.... its no longer a couple thousand products where you can mess-up on some new innovation...

But I'm not worried... there hasn't been much innovation elsewhere either so its not like Apple is behind... they are in front. Just not WAY in front. We'll see what happens with Leopard/802.11N/Santa Rosa/HD DVDs/Hybrid HDs..... innovation is in the pipeline. Don't worry.

2007 is going to be a very good year.

And 2008 even better. Presidential Election! ;)
